Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport Breaks Ground on New Terminal Project

2009-06-29

Kalamazoo, Michigan - June 29, 2009 the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport officially broke ground on the new terminal building project.  In August 2008 the Kalamazoo County Board of Aeronautics directed the aviation design consultants of Reynolds, Smith and Hills to provide an efficient, cost-conscious terminal building.  Martin Wander, Architect, RS&H said "This gateway to the Kalamazoo area will look toward its bright future but at the same time we won't forget its impressive past.  We are pleased that we have achieved the significant impact of bright open spaces and warmth of materials with simple and efficient spaces".

Board of Aeronautics Chair, Gil Collver, "While our existing terminal has served the Southwest Michigan region well for over five decades, the aging structure coupled with a dramatic change in the fundamentals of commercial air travel post 9/11 have rendered the existing building inadequate to serve its intended purpose".

The new terminal is funded using no local tax funds.  This project is funded through dollars from bonds, passenger user fees, FAA entitlements, FAA discretionary funds, and State of Michigan matched funds.
